When Getting There Isn’t Easy
Companions can often ride free
RTC and other transit systems allow companions or aides to ride for free with individuals who have disabilities. This may be a good way to ensure you have the help you need.
Keep emergency contacts handy
Sometimes, unexpected events cause delays or disruptions to your transportation plans. It’s a good idea to have a backup plan for any important trips you need to make and carry contact information with you for people who could help you in case of such an emergency.
Speak up when you encounter barriers to access
For a person with disabilities, damaged or cracked sidewalks, a lack of curb cutouts, bad or hidden signage, and route changes can make it hard or even impossible to access public transportation. If this happens to you, it’s important that you speak up!
You can advocate for change in the system that benefits you and others with disabilities. In Southern Nevada, you can do that by using the FixIt Clark County app.
When you download the app on your phone from the Apple or Google Play app store, all you need to do is create an account. Then you can report non-emergency issues of concern in your community. The app lets you report issues such as:
- Road or sidewalk damage
- Stray or lost animals
- Streetlight maintenance
- Curb issues
- Vandalism
- Trees or weeds obstructing roads or sidewalks
- Sewer or utility issues
- Excessive waste
