Navigating Online Dating with Confidence
Connecting with someone special can be tricky if your daily life doesn’t enable you to interact with new people. That’s why online dating apps and websites have become the number one way couples meet, with more than 50% of engaged couples saying this is how they found their partners.
There are dozens of online dating sites to choose from, some of which are designed exclusively for those with disabilities or other specific users, while others are open to people of all backgrounds.
Some traditional sites, like Match, Zoosk, eHarmony, Plenty of Fish, and OK Cupid, offer filters that allow you to search for members with or without disabilities. Apps such as Hinge, Tinder, and Bumble are also popular and can be used on your phone or mobile device.
Then there are dating sites designed specifically for people with disabilities, like Dateability, Whispers4U, DisabilityMatches, and Special Bridge, as well as other sites for specific disabilities, such as Hiki, for those who are neurodivergent. Try doing a browser search for “dating app + (your disability)” to find apps where you feel most comfortable.
This is just a small sampling of the sites out there that are designed to connect couples. Try one or two at a time and see where you feel most comfortable.
Age matters
Be mindful of age-appropriate relationships. Online apps usually are for those ages 18 and up, but, unfortunately, not everyone abides by the rules. If you’re under 18, focus on dating those you know personally or know are about your age. And be sure to observe personal safety when online dating. Remember, it’s illegal for anyone over 18 to pursue a romantic relationship with someone under 18.
Stay safe when online dating
Online dating apps can present challenges in getting to know who people really are. Unfortunately, while these apps can be very helpful in introducing you to potential partners, they can also attract people who want to deceive or defraud others.
Here are some basic tips for using online dating apps safely:
- Be alert to scams or requests for personal information like bank account information, your address, or your social security number.
- Never send money or gift cards to anyone you’re talking to online. In fact, if that happens, report it.
- Look out for “devotees,” which is another term to describe people who fetishize disabilities. Some apps, like Dateability, don’t allow devotees on their platforms, but others might.
- Don’t share financial information or any personal details. That means no addresses, phone numbers, or other such details, which can lead to fraud and compromise your security. Unfortunately, many scammers operate online and try to entrap people by convincing them of a romantic interest. Anyone who asks for these details or asks for money is likely a scammer.
- Don’t share any login information, either on the app or on any devices that you may share.
- Hide your contact information. Until you have developed trust over a long period of time with a person, it’s best to keep that private.
- Avoid malicious people. If someone is offensive or unkind in any way, stop interacting with them immediately and report it to the site. Do the same to anyone who pressures you for personal information or asks for money.
- If you decide to meet someone in person, do it in a public place, one that you know is accessible for you and where you feel comfortable. Either bring a trusted friend with you, or let people know where you’re going. Don’t take a ride with them, and keep your personal items with you at all times.
